Internship
Good News! I got my internship in McCann Erickson! Hoorraayyyy
They offer me a internship placement of graphic designer in McCann Erickson with RM200
allowance. It's much more enough for me as I can learn in the well known advertising agency and this
kind of experience is really valuable and precious, I can say.
The only problem for me is I'm required to bring my own laptop, and I'm using desktop. So, maybe
I can borrow one from my sister or as Ms Leong suggested, there might be a old mac in their company
which I can use, but it's not yet confirm. Hopes everything can be sure in this week, because I planned to go back my hometown for some relaxing moments.
And for those who are not yet got their internship offers, good lucks and happy holidays.
Final Submission
Today is the submission of our Project 2, after this we are free and have to get ready for internship program. So, here is what i came out for Focus Point.
The artist impression, the background image was IOI mall in Puchong.
Front view and side view of my exhibition design. As you can see, it's in diamond shape.
In the middle, there is a transparency cabinet to display the products.
3/4 view and top view, I added a LCD screen on each of side of the transparency cabinet and
I modify a little bit on the sofa, so it's slightly different from the previous design.
This is much more simple and closer to the feeling I trying to archive.

Herdog & De Meuron
Herdog & De Meuron, a Swiss architecture firm which founded and headquartered in Basel, Switzerland in 1978. They are best known for their conversion of the giant Bankside Powerstation in London to the new home of Tate Modern. Well, perhaps you never heard of that but I'm sure you are aware of their recent works, the Beijing National Stadium, Barcelona Forum Building, the Prada Tokyo and the Allianz Arena, Germany.
The reason I'm sharing this is because Mr. Zul suggested me the Allianz Arena in Germany as a reference for my Project 2 the Exhibition Design, which I can also consider the silk-screened glass as exterior materials and treatments in my design later.
In fact, most of us have seen some of their works before but I think none of us know a little about the heroes behind every of these amazing and stunning architecture designs. It's time for us to give some credits and appreciations towards the designers.
Here are some pictures of their works, you can go to their > website < for more awesomeness projects.

Think and Plan
In order to fulfill the requirement of Phase 1 Exhibition Design, we have to come out one layout plan, facade elevation and also the side elevation. Since I'm using part of the Diamond as my design metaphor, so i have to deal with the shape of the diamond which is quite hard for me to imagine how it looks like for front and side view. After trying several times on technical drawing of my design, even with some references from internet, i failed to draw exactly to what it should looks like in my mind. So, I start to work in other ways. I try to model the diamond out using some cardboard, and then follow the shape and outline. This help me a lot faster on technical drawing. But then..."Why don't I use the Maya software?" I can easily get the 3 sides view done by just doing a simple diamond model in Maya...how silly...well...just a reminder...think and plan well before you work! haha

Exhibition Design Phase 1
I'm doing exhibition design for focus point, I choose diamond as my design metaphor as it's the representative of clear(function) and fashionable(style) which I think are most suitable with the concept of Focus Point in their products.
In stead of using the whole diamond, I use only part of it in my exhibition design. I want my exhibition looks with elegant mood/feel, I also plan to have some specialty lighting and also the abstract shapes on my design.
I'm not satisfy with the outcome of Graphics board, poor composition.

Container as Content
"Content is the king!" This sentence can be heard frequently many years ago, this is to emphasis how important the content is as the main subject of the overall. But then, with the technologies growth, this sentence become less and less correct, the containers now are as important as the content. Our generation are flooded by numerous information no matter which industry your in, we can easily get any specific information according to our will by just searching through internet, so peoples are no more focus on the content as everyone can get the same info from the internet. Then, the containers, are the one most important roles in making a successful campaign, let's say in advertising industry. The choice or decision on choosing the right media(container) in order to advertise your campaign successfully is very important, the media that suitable and appropriate will bring you unexpected results on the other hand, a wrong one will bring you down of course.
I'm not saying the content is not important at all, but both of them share the same weight on making a successful campaign. A not so good idea/content with a good choice of media/container definitely better than a good idea with a wrong choice of media. This is about your target audience as well. No adults will be attracted by if your campaign is about babies toy but in adult's channel.

Murphy's Law in Design
This is definitely a new term to me, Murphy's Law. "Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong" is the basic definition that i got from internet. For examples, bread will always fall jelly side down, you are late and your boss shown up, your computer crash before you saved your works, and when you stuck in traffic, the other lanes will move faster.
If we apply the Murphy's Law in Design, the result will probably like this, you rushed your design works day and night and it ends up postponed, your clients will always NOT pick the design that you love, your printer will run out ink when you need it.
Well, this is just too pessimistic to me, i rather explain all these situations with unlucky, bad day or coincidence. I did experienced one or two of the situation but it's about my attitude and discipline problem, why the law doesn't apply on others peoples? For example the traffic situation.
I believe if you planned your schedule nicely, and complete all the task given and planned then things will be fine and it should be. It's about how you think, so think positively and be optimistic, what's the point of being pessimistic since the life is filled up with so many unexpected.
There are so many examples here, look at these and have a good laugh

Ideas?
It's time to start doing some research and choose the company you prefer for project 2, exhibition design.
Exhibitor Online a website which organize an exhibit design awards annually, the point is they provide the examples of exhibition design of past year winners. You can go through of it and take them as precedent studies as well. Winners of 2007 2008 2009 2010. All of the examples are very inspiring, good use of the materials, the space in order to create the atmosphere and design which are suitable for the brand's concept.
Beside of the inspiring examples, you can also find some useful tips about exhibition design here. Planning, budgeting, graphics and even tips for promotion and tricks to make a small exhibit stands out.
This website really save you a lots of time on searching for good examples/precedent studies, the only bad is you have to pay for certain articles.
But what i have mentioned above is totally free! I guess it's much more enough for our current project.

[share] Paper Art and Paper Sculptures
Hey guys, check this link out for the awesome paper art and paper sculptures.
http://www.hongkiat.com/blog/masters-of-paper-art-and-paper-sculptures-part-ii/
Instead of drawing on the paper, the masters turn the paper into an artwork. You can't deny their creativity of turning the blank papers into any kind of animals you name it. Owl, eagle, horse, goat, tiger and even human and building. They don't just simply cut out the shape, they care about every details of the paper art & sculpture, fur especially.
Of course, you need a very skillful technique and experience in order to achieve that, but for me the main important requirement is the patient and the passion. You have to focus and really concentrate on every cut and carve. Same goes to the model making we are going to deal with later. Making a box is easy but it's hard if you want to make it nicely done. It's even harder for model making. So, be patient! Don't rush to finish it quickly, do care about the quality! Act like a master :)

Navigational Design
Main Entrance of Putrajaya Sentral |
> As i walk through of it, i find out most of the signage are above the eye level, they are very well designed graphics with captions and even highlighted with green borders. It's very eye catching together with the black background.
< Instead of having another signage board, a green highlighted line was insert as the divider for two different direction of signage. This is quite smart and cost saving.
> The position of this signage is not that appropriate for me as it's position is simply too high. This signage is right on the entrance of KLIA express. It's not that easy to be notice.
< There are another design of signage, white color of graphic with blue background, they are hanging beside the wall and used on showing the public facilities provided like public phone and lift.
> You couldn't find the ATM service on the signage board, it's left out. This is because the ATM machine was built after the set up of signage board i guess.
< You can also find some no smoking and no entry signage on the wall or the elevator just for reminding purpose.
> Besides that, there are many others signage in the building, toilet for men, women, the disabled, prayer room, and also store room. The design are very simple and consistent.
< For the ground floor, it's basically for the bus, taxi, and parking purpose. So, you can see some signboard with platform number on it, it's also stated out the which the company of the bus belong to. Each schedule of the bus are also provided and well categorized on the big signboard, passengers can check out the correct time schedule of every bus.
Before i end my research, i decided to put my directory sign on the main entrance of the Putrajaya sentral, right on the middle of it. This is the most suitable position i think.
